GUEST SPEAKER 2nd AUGUST.

MICHAEL WILLIAMS

"The Wheeler Centre, the Cornerstone of Australia's Literary Activity"

The Wheeler Centre is Melbourne’s home for smart, passionate and entertaining public talks on every topic.

The story began with a blank sheet of paper and an ambitious idea; an idea that was born from the observation that while every great city has its grand cultural institutions – art galleries, theatres, museums and concert halls – there was a place for a unique institution that would provide a hub for the discussion, debate and practice of writing and ideas.  Such a cultural centre would enhance and consolidate our city’s reputation as a world leader in this arena.

MEMBER NEWS - MARY VOICE

Mary spoke to the meeting last Tuesday about her 'other' involvement.

"My work with the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS), since becoming President in February, has reduced my ability to participate in Rotary.

AMOS has secured a UN agency head to open its national conference in Canberra next February (President of the World Meteorological Organization), and convinced the ABC to run a special Q and A in Canberra on the opening night of the conference – two pleasing opportunities.

ALMONER'S CORNER

From time to time fellow members health and circumstances change and working with them quietly behind the scenes is the Almoner.  Often indisposed members miss the fellowship of club meetings and they would appreciate contact from their buddies in the club.

Allan Driver, standing in as Almoner while Dick is indisposed, has provided the following update of members/partners from our club family;
  • "Roy Garrett: He has had a knee reconstruction operation on Monday 25th June and by all reports, the operation was a success. He is now be entering rehabilitation;
  • Annie Garrett: She is progressing well with treatment after an operation around 2 months ago for ovarian cancer;
  • Dick Mitchell: He is headed for an operation on his Achilles tendon in the next week or so and after that will be undergoing rehabilitation for some weeks.
 I am sure they would appreciate a phone call or an email every now and then."
