NEXT MEETING

PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL NOT BE A MEETING ON TUESDAY 4th APRIL.

GUEST SPEAKER'S PRESENTATION 28th MARCH
Dr Ben Wellings, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Monash University.

“Brexit, English Nationalism and the Anglosphere”

“Perhaps the greatest threat a Brexit poses to Australia is the potential disruption to a relationship with the EU that at last appears to be on a decent footing.”

Ben’s presentation was timely as this week Brexit takes real shape with Theresa May, Prime Minister of the UK scheduled to write to the EU on Wednesday 29th March.  This commences the 2 year process as set in the EU Treaty.  From 2019 UK will no longer being a part of the EU after 6 years membership which underpins 44 years of UK foreign policy.

One clear observation was with regard to leadership given the complete absence of a plan (by all parties) as they were not anticipating winning.

Ben highlighted the awkward and uncertain nature of the English people themselves, and observed that the UK is loosening at its national seams.  A map showed this divide, with Scotland, Northern Ireland, London, and Welsh speaking Wales all voting to stay with the EU.  The vote to leave correlates with areas experiencing economic deprivation and high levels of migration (Henning and Dorling 2016).

Capturing the depth of Ben’s presentation is difficult given the word limit, however members are encouraged to read the following article which provides a comprehensive summary of what was covered by Ben, with particular focus on Australia –

MEETING REPORT 28th MARCH
  1. Visiting Rotarians and guests.
  • Des Benjamin
  • David Duncan
  • Rana Ebrahimi’.  Rana’s application for Membership has been accepted by the Board, with her induction as a new Rotarian is scheduled for 11th April

  1. Announcements.
  • Peter Duras shared that Health Care Australia have donated 25 computer desks (good quality) for Computers for Community which will be delivered to DIK
  • Alan Seale presented President Justine with four Banners from various Philippines’ Rotary Clubs which were given as part of the February-March Vocational Exchange.
  • Tom Callendar reminded all that the club will be celebrating ‘3 decades young’ on Sunday 7th May.  Information on this lunchtime event will be circulated ‘when ready’.  There is also a thought that the Barbershop (Unisex) Quartet may be reformed.  Anyone (with vocal chords in working order!) who is interested in joining please let Tom know.
  • President Justine reminded all present that there will be no meeting on Tuesday 4th April – members can enjoy a nice sleep in after all the busyness of conference!

3. Conference Update.

  • DG Neville shared that already he knows the Conference is going to be great!
  • An electronic tag board has been created and there will be a chance this year to capture all ideas electronically, particularly key given every Rotary Project begins within one person having an idea.  There is great excitement building and he thanked everyone for all their hard work, particularly to Kevin and Veronica for the sleepless nights and extra mile they have gone.
  • Kevin Love (Conference Organiser Extraordinaire!) noted that there are 725 delegates registered to attend, plus 115 Choristers for the Finale.  All members present should encourage people to stay to the Finale as it is going to be a wonderful experience.  Many hands make light work, and it will be ‘all hands on deck’ from 5-6pm on Thursday for the set up.
  • Friday night dinner is almost full.  There are still a few spots – please let Millie Swann know if you’d like to attend.  The dinner includes free alcohol (except Espresso Martinis – according to Kevin;  Is he covering these?)  Friday dinner is $50 plus club contribution.  Sunday brunch is a thank-you for your volunteer efforts at the conference.
  • Please check the latest Conference Volunteer Roster received this week from Frank O’Brien.  It is important that everyone is clear on duties assigned.
  • Dress:  please wear blue polo shirts on both days and to the welcome function.  Saturday night is party attire.
  • Seating:  reserved for club members throughout conference at the back of the venue so we can come and go without interruption to others.
  • Finale:  all members will be asked to go to front of the auditorium for a word of thanks – Kevin would like you to not only wear your blue polo shirt, but also a smile!
  • Let’s get Mooooving – see you at Conference!
Sadly the swindle pot of gold was not won.
