THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER

Paul Harris Breakfast - Bookings Essential

Daniel Flynn

The 'Thankyou' journey - a blueprint for turning ideas into reality

Driven, resourceful and determined, Daniel Flynn is one of Australia’s most successful entrepreneurs under the age of 30.

He is the founder and managing director of the social enterprise Thankyou, which has given more than $5.5 million to help end global poverty.

Thankyou’s 50 products are stocked by major retailers in Australia and 100 per cent of profits go to funding water, sanitation, child and maternal health and food projects around the world. In nine short years, Thankyou has directly impacted the lives of 755,538 people in 20 countries, including Australia.

Daniel is also the author of best-selling book Chapter One, a story that generated $1.4 million in sales in its first month using an unorthodox ‘pay-what-you-want’ model.

He is a genius at disruptive marketing and has received widespread media coverage for some truly unconventional and highly successful campaigns that led to Thankyou products being stocked by some of Australia’s biggest retailers. He is an engaging and thoughtful speaker and his talks offer a blueprint for turning ideas into reality.

GUEST SPEAKER LAST TUESDAY

Member Talk - Kevin Love

Kevin Love presented on his work on the board of Phillip Island Nature Parks, presenting facts and figures.

There were approximately 1.5 million visitors to Phillip Island last year. Each penguin generated approximately $30,000 in the year, which is lot for a little guy.

Churchill Island was the first place in Victoria where crops were planted, in 1803. The island is named after John Churchill who had provided the seeds for the crops. The claim to lands was not made just by planting a flag but ‘improving’ the land by planting crops or the erection of buildings.

The Island has successfully eradicated foxes on Churchill Island and now Phillip Island. As a result, there has been the successful reestablishment of the Eastern Bar Bandicoot on Churchill Island.

A new visitor centre is being built and is a major focus of the Board at the moment, as they try to minimize disruption to existing services.

REVISITING SHINE FOR KIDS

Although Mick Wells has moved on as CEO of Shine for Kids to settle amongst the penguins, the Club and Community retain a strong interest in this wonderful organisation. Set up to support kids with a parent in the criminal justice system, they are still adjusting to the loss of Mick's drive and commitment. They have moved from Footscray into a small office in Ross House in Flinders Lane.

A couple of recent visits show that they are clearly under resourced , though tackling a number of labor intensive programs. They were overjoyed on Wednesday when Sue and I were able to deliver 80 pairs of brightly coloured pairs of new thongs and shoes donated by the Club's old friends Caprice, and 45 assorted balls collected by the  Have a Ball Foundation, founded by Rohan Duncan. Most of these were new and consisted of footballs ( rugby, soccer and AFL ), basketballs and volleyballs. We should be able to keep up the supply through Duncan in the future. Monetary value is probably $1500, but more importantly we hope this puts smiles on a lot of faces as we approach Christmas.

RCM will continue the smile initiative for the kids through the TREE OF JOY program in December.

MEMBER ENGAGEMENT SURVEY

FINAL CHANCE TO COMPLETE

Please use the following link to complete the member engagement survey: https://goo.gl/forms/CS8p6xwnVlJjgedt1

Estimated time to complete - less than two minutes.

As part of the membership committee's work to ensure that members are fulfilled with their membership and we are able to create a compelling membership value proposition they have created a member engagement survey. Some participants may be targeted for further discussions if they wish but all members are encouraged to complete the survey.
SPECIAL DIK WORKING BEE

There will be a working bee at DIK after our club meeting on Tuesday 28th November.

As you probably know, our club supports the Donations in Kind (DIK) warehouse in Footscray financially and with working bees a couple of times a year. This particular effort is important as DIK is moving to a new warehouse in the same complex to reduce the effect of a rent increase.

Many hands make light work and it would be great if you could join us.

The warehouse is at 400 Somerville Rd, West Footscray VIC 3012 and we expect to be there from about 9:30am. There is no fixed time for your involvement so we'd be pleased to see you for 1 hour or 4 hours.

A few of us will be driving there after the meeting at the RACV club so if you'd like a lift please let me know  - contact Rob Hines.
