Russell Shields – The Community Grocer

"The Community Grocer - Food for Healthy Connected Communities"

The Community Grocer is about empowering healthy connected communities and we do this by running weekly affordable fresh food markets across Melbourne.

In answer to the growing need for fresh food access and the inherent limitations on the broader food relief system, the Community Grocer model is all about dignity, choice and inclusion.

Currently running five weekly markets across Melbourne, three of which are based on public housing estates, we aim to increase intake of fruit and vegetables in a vibrant and inclusive community setting.

Russell is the Founder and Chair of The Community Grocer, a social enterprise initiative that aims to improve access for people living in public housing to fresh affordable food via a weekly fruit and vegetable market.

Russell is a member of the StreetSmart Grants Committee and was a founding member of the City of Melbourne Homelessness Advisory Committee. He is currently a Founding Member of the Social Enterprise Network of Victoria and the recently formed City of Melbourne Food Alliance.

In 2013 Russell was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study `International models of food rescue and community food initiatives that address food security for vulnerable populations’, and in 2017 was awarded a scholarship from the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation to attend the Social Enterprise World Forum in Christchurch.

RoCan Ride for a Cure

On March 1st, along with 29 other cyclists and 8 support staff, I’ll be kicking off a 1,100 kilometre ride from Sydney to Melbourne in aide of research for cancer in Men and Women.

This year is particularly special for me with the recent passing of a great friend of the NAB in Damien Woodruff from pancreatic cancer.

I know you get a lot of these requests and the maximum donation I’m seeking is $5.

Donations can be made to mycause via the link below or preferably by transferring to NAB account 083-028 69-968-2905 (this saves transactions costs).

Humanitarian Tour to Cambodia and Laos

District 9800 recognized project "World of Difference" has organised a 12 day tour to Cambodia and Laos, leaving on March 16th, 2019.

This is a great opportunity to see Rotary projects in action as well as experiencing Cambodian and Laos culture that is not accessible to ordinary tourists. Through our excellent contacts on the ground there you will not only enjoy the tourist sights of Angkor Wat and Luang Prabang but you will visit remote villages and interact with the locals and the school children.

Our club has funded 5 primary schools in Luang Prabang, I attended the most recent school opening on behalf of Rotary Central Melbourne in December.

Our club also funded life saving surgery for a young Laotion boy, Nonh, in 2017 and you will have the opportunity of visiting his village and meeting Nonh and his father, Bounsy.

While in Luang Prabang the accomodation is at Somnuek's 5 star resort, My Dream.

We have secured very reasonable airfares and accomodation so the entire tour will only cost $3,299 per person twin share flying economy.

Further details and the booking form have been emailed to members separately.

True or False?

Herb Greenwood told a tale of being detained by authorities in Hong Kong for wandering into restricted parts of the new airport. The story proved to be true.

Announcements

  • Herb Greenwood encouraged people to book as soon as possible for the Opera on the Yarra on Saturday March 2nd and to get as many friends and acquaintances to do so as well.

  • Roger Thornton reminded members of the Peninsula BBQ at Lorraine Meehan’s on Sunday March 17th and requested that they let him know whether or not they were coming.

  • Suvam Ganguli announced that the venue had been secured for the Diversity Breakfast on Tuesday March 19th. It will be held at William Angliss College in Lonsdale Street.

  • Mark Rees is participating in the Birdman Rally at Moomba to raise funds for the Disaster Aid Australia SAFE WATER project (see below). The biggest fundraiser on the day receives a $10,000 grant from the Moomba organisers so there is a great opportunity to leverage funds for the project. It is also the subject of a global grant application.  Mark can be supported by donating at https://birdmanrally.gofundraise.com.au/page/MarkRees0 .

President’s Announcements

  • President Neville thanked our Almoners, Allan Driver and Rebecca John for their work keeping in touch with people.

  • He also thanked Doug Robertson for his work as Victorian Multi District Conference organizer.

  • He congratulated the delegation to India, led by Rob Hines and passed on the thanks he had received from the President of our Sister Club over there.

  • He noted that the board at its last meeting had agreed to run another club forum on Tuesday April 16th.

Guest Speaker

Brian Ashworth from RC Endeavour Hills spoke about Disaster Aid Australia (DAA), an initiative of his club, and how it had evolved from a project that sent family survival kits to disaster areas to one that focused on providing clean water and assistance in rebuilding after disasters, which were more pressing needs in the Asia Pacific area.

The clean water project is based on a filtration system that effectively removes bacteria without the need for power or chemicals (apart from bleach to clean the filter from time to time). One system can supply water for 700 people and over a ten year period the cost works out to be $1 per person per day.

The project last year was selected as one of 16 finalists from 2,300 entrants from all over the world in a sustainability project award run by Energy Globe.

The Safe Water project is expanding away from just disaster relief to rolling out the system in needy communities more generally.  Specifically DAA is seeking to install the systems in 120 schools in Bhutan. To support this DAA in conjunction with the RC of Thimpu in Bhutan have organized a travel opportunity for people to visit Bhutan and donate a water filter as part of the trip. More details can be obtained from admin@disasteraidaustralia.org.au .
